Newman Center Special Collection

Bishop Zinkula has announced a special collection in all parishes of the Diocese of Davenport in support of the Newman Catholic Student Center in Iowa City the weekend of October 9-10, 2021.  Newman Center is a Roman Catholic ministry to those students, faculty and staff associated with The University of Iowa. Its mission is to promote their development within a faith community and to prepare them as disciples for the Church and the world.  Currently, Newman Center offers a faith home to the 7000+ self-identified Catholic students on campus.

A recent Pew Research study reveals of the Catholics who leave their faith, 80% do so by the age of 23.  Other research reveals those involved in campus ministry go on, in large numbers, to be active parishioners post graduation. Please join Newman Center in the battle for the hearts and minds of young people during a very transformative time in their lives!

Newman Center is 100% self-funded through the generosity of donors like YOU!  Learn more about the mission and ministries of the only Newman center in our diocese by visiting, reading the brochure available in our parish and by watching the video on our parish website.  Gifts for this special collection can be made in the designated SURROUND*SUPPORT*STRENGTHEN 2021 envelopes available at the parish or securely online on the Iowacatholic website.  Thank you for your gift consideration of this important ministry of the Diocese of Davenport.

Moving to Step 3

The Diocese of Davenport has officially moved to Step 3 in the reopening process.
In Step 3:
  • Masks and social distancing are not required by anyone who is vaccinated.
  • The Diocese recommends that if you are not fully vaccinated, keep taking all precautions until you are fully vaccinated including wearing a mask, maintaining six foot social distance, hand sanitizing, and using well-ventilated spaces. Please keep in mind that large group gatherings, such as Mass, do put unvaccinated individuals at higher risk. Consideration should be given to remaining at home until vaccinated.
  • In general, indoor meetings and gatherings inside and outside are not time limited. Organizers should be attentive to the amount of time gathered; the longer the time together, the greater the risk for infection unless all attendees are vaccinated. The capacity of people in a space is determined by the need for unvaccinated people to maintain six-foot distancing between them and other unvaccinated people.
Read the full Diocesan Reopening Policy here.
All pews will be open at St. Mary Pella. However, if you would prefer to sit socially distanced during Mass please let one of the ushers know and they will direct you to a socially distanced seat.

Public Masses Resume!

Did you hear the great news? Public Masses will resume in the Davenport Dioceses on Monday, June 22, 2020. We are very excited to welcome everyone back to Mass. However, this must be done safely. Please see the document, ‘How To Sign Up for Mass,’ for a step by step guide.

Every household wishing to attend a Mass of Sunday will have to follow the set-out guidelines in order to reserve a seat. You are welcome to attend your normal Mass of Sunday, be that at Pella or Oskaloosa. Due to the limited number of seating available, we are asking that each household only sign up for one Mass a month at this time.

Weekday Mass will also be resuming with a new schedule.

                • Tuesday – 8 am, SMO
                • Wednesday – 12:15 pm, SMP
                • Thursday – 7 am, SMO
                • Friday – 8:30 am, SMP

At this time you do NOT need to sign up for weekday Masses. This may change in the future, as there are a limited number of seats available.

Our first Masses of Sunday will be offered on June 27th and 28th. The Sign up for all Masses of Sunday for the month of June and July will open on Monday, June 22. Please read the included document to find out more about signing up via the internet or by calling the parish office.

We all look forward to welcoming you back to Mass at St. Mary’s!
